Digital Lightbox. Face to Face: Deakin University Art Gallery

Riverie investigates the trepidations of post-colonial place-makers in 21st century Australia. This is addressed through ideas of habitation and belonging by a dissection of GPS codes, topography and visual identity systems. Conceptually the work explores the relationship between the visual narratives of individuals not born in this land and the conflict of belonging within this milieu

Riverie presents the viewer with a luminous flooded window into which a dissection of texture, pathways, maps and tributaries culminate to provide a vision of the artists’ experiences. The digitally enhanced photographic light box reveals a narrative that seeks to embed and extend the philosophies of post colonialism and historical ties, physical and metaphysical boundaries and systems of identity. This exploration is a research shift for the artist into addressing sites and spaces of liminality.

In 2012, Riverie, was commissioned by the Deakin University Art Gallery, for the exhibition Face to Face. This work was developed in dialogue with the painting ‘Man with a Green Coat’ (1998) by Kylie Wren, which is held in the Deakin University Art Collection.  The exhibition was supported by a catalogue and public program including floor talks, panels and seminars.
