Liminal Project
Liminal Project
Sound to Light Festival, Salamanca Arts Centre, Hobart, Tasmania
Liminal Project is part of an ongoing dialogue, which captivates the artist and is concerned with the notion of liminal space. This work addresses the possibilities of actions and events that are located at the site of the in-between. Such possibilities possess action and in-action and well as animation and static occurrences, which are drawn into the artist’s repertoire to provide generative iterations of visions. These have culminated and developed in a collaborative process between artist Tonya Meyrick and sound designer Mathew Dewey.
The collaboration resulted in an innovative site-specific installation of visuals and audio where a dual projection was multiplied, mirrored and refracted within the gallery environment. This produced a temporal, textural and visual landscape, which was affected and interrupted by the movement of the viewers through the space. The soundscape resonated in the sandstone complex and enhanced the viewer’s interpretations and experience of liminal space in an inventive and impermanent manner.
A 2011 collaboration between the artists in Melbourne and Adelaide, Liminal Project - was commission by the Sound to Light Festival, funded by Arts Tasmania, and supported by the Salamanca Arts Council in Hobart, Tasmania. The launch event was accompanied by workshops and displays, which addressed contemporary practices and dialogues between technology, design, light, sound and art.
