Late
Late
(Finalist) in Bayton Awards, Rockhampton Art Gallery, Rockhampton, Qld
This work continues the artist’s interrogation with the sites and spaces of the in-between. Late, explores the discernment’s of travelling without moving, the city grid and of how our experiences within these sites are transient, intangible and often impalpable. Light, shadow, pattern and motion are woven together to capture and explore a narrative of liminality that produces a filmic seizure, frozen at the moment of experience. The idea of space and site – the basis of liminality, are questioned by the artist and shared with the viewer to engage the ‘other’ in the conceptual dialogue.
Late, operates within the wider milieu of lens-based practice and entanglements of contemporary critical theory. This involves the practical engagement with de Certeau’s Practices of Everyday Life, through the remix of artifact, texture, pattern and media. These elements are reproduced and renegotiated within a digital and historical frame as well as on canvas. Through these actions the work proposes a renewed understanding of sites and spaces of our shared experiences and examines the consequences and effects of the in-between.
In 2013, the artist’s work was shortlisted for the Bayton Award, at the Rockhampton City Gallery, Queensland. The award is a non-acquisitive prize celebrating the diversity and excitement of visual arts in Central Queensland and is named in honour of the Right Reverend John Bayton AM for his significant contribution to the development of the Rockhampton Art Gallery collection. The Bayton Award is a joint initiative between the Rockhampton Art Gallery Trust, Rockhampton Art Gallery, and Rockhampton Regional Council. The biannual exhibition was accompanied by talks, which addressed contemporary practices and dialogues celebrating regional artists.
